Today we are going to learn how to pronounce the names of starters and dishes of French gastronomy.
It can be useful if you go to a restaurant in France!
FRENCH CUISINE STARTERS
Snails are often made with parsley butter, that is, with butter and parsley.
This is not a dish we eat every day, but rather during family celebrations!
LE FOIE GRAS
Foie gras can be the liver of a duck or a goose.
We often eat foie gras for birthdays or holidays like Christmas and New Years.
LES CUISSES DE GRENOUILLE
Frog legs are made with butter, garlic and parsley, like snails, or even breaded!
If you’ve ever heard the English talk about the French by calling them Froggies, it’s because of this dish!
Oysters are often swallowed raw with lemon juice or shallot vinegar.
Like foie gras, oysters are often eaten at the end of the year for the holidays.
LA SOUPE Á L’OIGNON
Onion soup is an onion soup covered with croutons and gratin cheese.
We often eat onion soup after a party, such as a wedding, late at night or very early in the morning.
LA QUICHE LORRAINE
The Lorraine quiche is a savory tart from the Lorraine region, made with eggs, crème fraîche and bacon.
It is often eaten as a starter or as an aperitif, but it can also be eaten as a main course.
THE FRENCH MAIN DISHES
LE COQ AU VIN
It is prepared with rooster, bacon, red wine, carrots and mushrooms.
If you can’t find a rooster, you can of course use chicken!
The tartiflette is a potatoes gratin, bacon, onions and reblochon cheese.
It’s a popular dish in winter!
The pot-au-feu is a beef broth cooked over a low heat with vegetables such as carrots, cabbage, leeks or celery.
This traditional French dish is ideal for warming up.
LE BŒUF BOURGIGNON
Beef Bourguignon is a dish from the Burgundy region, made with beef and red wine.
It is a dish that is traditionally eaten on Sundays with the family.
Ratatouille is a vegetable stew from the south of France, made with tomatoes, zucchini, eggplant and onions, among others.
Ratatouille doesn’t always look as good as Disney’s, but it’s still very good.
The croque-monsieur is a grilled ham and cheese sandwich.
The exact origin of its name is not known, but this sandwich may have been created for men in a hurry.
The croque-madame is a croque-monsieur with a fried egg placed on it.
The egg on top has the same shape as women’s hats from the time of her creation.
LE STEAK TARTARE
This very popular dish is made with raw ground beef mixed with an egg yolk and sauces like ketchup, mustard or English sauce.
Traditionally, steak tartare can also be prepared with horse meat.
LE GRATIN DAUPHINOIS
The gratin dauphinois is a potatoes gratin, crème fraîche, milk and garlic.
Its name comes from the ancient French region of Dauphiné, near Italy.
Raclette is a Swiss dish made from melted cheese poured over potatoes and accompanied by cold meats.
This is one of the French’s favorite dishes!
LE HACHIS PARMENTIER
Parmentier hash is a dish of mashed potatoes mixed with ground beef.
It is a Parisian dish whose name is dedicated to Antoine Parmentier, a pharmacist who used it to get out of famine.
LA FONDUE SAVOYARDE
Savoyard fondue is a mixture of melted cheese and white wine in which pieces of bread are dipped.
It’s a dish we often eat when we go skiing in the mountains, like raclette and tartiflette!
Alsace sauerkraut is made with fermented cabbage, sausages and salted meat.
You can also find seafood sauerkraut, or even vegetarian sauerkraut.
Bouillabaisse is a stew of fish, potatoes and bread rubbed with garlic.
She comes from the city of Marseille and is very popular around the Mediterranean.
LE SOUFFLÉ AU FROMAGE
It is a dish made with whipped eggs and cheese.
There are also sweet soufflés that can be eaten for dessert!
